Glossary

From time to time, I’ll use a few terms that may be unfamiliar or just shorthand.  If you weren’t aware, programmers are extremely lazy - in a good way.  Reusability is the key to stable complexity.  Think of the items below as base classes.

  • ooks&fgbp - Olive Oil, Kosher Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper
These items are called for in nearly every recipe I write, so it’s a good idea to keep them on hand.  I recommend having at least 2 olive oils: an inexpensive extra virgin olive oil to use during steps involving heat, and a high-quality extra virgin olive oil to use for salad dressings, finishing hot dishes, drizzling, and pouring over vanilla ice cream :-)

For the kosher salt, I recommend Diamond Crystal, though Morton’s will work well in most cases.  As for the black pepper, spend $6 to get a black peppercorn spice grinder.  You can find them in the spices aisle of your grocery store - they come pre-loaded with black peppercorns and the cap of the bottle is actually a grinder.  I go through one every 2 months or so (in heavy use), which means they’ll probably last you a good deal longer.
